Keep from Becoming Overwhelmed

On our way to keep the momentum going, we sometimes forget to keep the balance in our lives. This element is key, because if we exert too much energy into one or two areas, the effort will not be sustainable in the long run, and it becomes much easier to revert back to our old habits.

There is no exact science to finding balance, because it is highly dependent on the individual's needs and wants and creating fair compromises to enhance one's happiness. The easiest way to figure out whether or not there is equilibrium is to determine if one or two priorities are sought after to the detriment of everything else. This can be a struggle because of “people’s tendency to let themselves be overcome and dominated by thoughts that start from far away, deep in our minds, and slowly spread out to a point in which they can no longer be controlled and taken over” (Didonna, 2008, p. 8).  If there is a significant imbalance, a very useful tool is mindfulness: the act of engaging the present moment while reserving judgment. When a person observes and stays aware of his thoughts, feelings, and environment (without judgement), it can help keep things in perspective and give clarity into what is needed and wanted in a given situation.

Adding Perspective

"When faced with life's problems, a balance between thought and action is necessary. On one hand, too much rumination becomes a self-protective bubble of our fears, insecurities, and defenses where a false sense of security and productivity are created. On the other hand, too much mindless activity leads to escapism where we are not truly in control of the situation. The equilibrium of the two catapults us to fully engage the present moment and empowers us in our circumstances" (Motio Fitness, 2014).

Meditate for 5 minutes each day.  1. Find a quiet comfortable place to sit.  2. Find a relaxing position to be in.  3. Breathe in deeply and exhale slowly (1...2...3…). Repeat this until your body releases the tension and your mind becomes calm.  4. Close your eyes and try to clear your mind by imagining that your thoughts and feelings as a part of a movie and you are a neutral observer.
